Learning Objectives

This two-day workshop has been designed to provide HR Business Partners with the business and finance skills, perspectives and tools that they require to become more commercially astute within the company. To help them make the most effective decisions - decisions aligned with company strategy. Unless Partners understand how the business works, they are not likely to meet this expectation. The course also highlights how everyone's job counts towards the continuing success of the company and why all individuals must contribute by making commercially sound decisions

 

Outcomes

The primary aim of the Business Acumen programme is to generate greater understanding among attendees of how the company works and what makes it successful. This will include:

  • Having a clear understanding of the company's business environment. What is the competition?
  • Recognising company strategy and the vital role HR has to play
  • Understand how, where and when the company makes money. Decode the jargon used so extensively by the finance team
  • How being able to read financial statements helps you understand the challenges facing your colleagues
  • Understanding why ratios and comparative analysis play such a big part in your colleagues' day
  • Creating a simple budget using accepted principles
  • Being able to blend these elements together while examining your own or a specimen business case

Trainers' Profile

The trainer is a highly experienced and knowledgeable Finance training specialist and leadership coach, his skills honed during 25 years in a variety of management roles. He has spent a considerable amount of time training and coaching young and developing leaders, his work spanning direct leadership situations as a captain in the British Army in conflict zones to mentoring multinational teams of bankers in Nagoya, Japan.

He worked for more than 15 years in middle-and senior-level management for a variety of international banks. He ran proprietary portfolios in Fixed Income, Foreign Exchange, swaps and other derivative instruments. He sat on Risk Management committees in both London and Tokyo before becoming a learning and development professional. He now uses his extensive experience to deliver highly effective finance and leadership coaching to a wide range of businesses.

The trainer has managed and organised investment-banking teams on three continents, this work involving considerable organisational skills as well as deep knowledge of international markets. He is fluent in French and German.

Switchgear and Power System Protection

Overview

Protecting assets to minimize electrical disruption is vital in every business' daily operations. The protection of switchgears (and circuit breakers) and power system is an integral part of ensuring quality electrical distribution and performance. Without planned protection, "faults" are bound to occur more frequently and may cause serious damages to the business. In most cases, these faults will result in disruption of normal functioning of a system, which will cause high stress-levels to the electrical conductors and connected equipment thermally and electro-dynamically.

The solution to electrical disruption and faults is to create a right protection system for switchgear and the power system. With efficient protection, faults may be detected in advance to mitigate risks and reduction in downtime. In addition to creating a wellrounded protection plan and maintenance strategies for switchgears and power systems, this intensive 5-day programme zooms in to the installation, testing and commissioning of switchgears to allow participants to take away practical solutions to overcome their day-today challenges in operations and maintenance of equipment.

As the installation of high voltage distribution and transmission equipment increases due to the ever-growing global demand for power, there is increasing need to ensure the reliability of the operations of power systems. Power transformers are among the most important and most expensive components of power systems. Their failure can impose extraordinarily high costs on plants, factories and utilities of all descriptions. It is critical that all personnel operating and working with such equipment have a sound knowledge of their operational requirements and maintenance.

This intensive program focuses on the essential components of power systems; which are the transformers and switchgears, and provides deeper understanding of what is involved in the maintenance and asset management of these components. This is to ensure that the power systems are in tip-top condition and to prevent unexpected interruption.

 

 

 

Trainers’ Profile

Behrouz has completed degree courses in telecommunications and electrical engineering overseas. He also completed his studies in electrical Utility engineering at Curtin University in 2004.

Behrouz started his career in the oil and gas industry where his role got him involved in the maintenance and repair of electronic and navigational marine equipment (VHF and SSB radios, Sat Nav, engine control panels etc). He then moved to the power industry and was involved in the design, installation, and commissioning of substations mainly for consultancies and utilities. He has also established a good reputation in teaching power system protection over his long term services lecturing at Curtin University, and also over the period he worked as a Protection Engineer in New Zealand.

Over the past years, Behrouz has been involved in many major projects across Australia (Port Hedland, Barrow Island, Tamar Valley, Karratha, and Newman for example). His most recent experience is related to cost estimation and risk assessment of major substation projects with a special focus on the secondary systems (Protection, COMMS, SCADA).

He has also worked as an Engineering Manager and Senior Project Engineer on major copper mine projects overseas. Behrouz has also gained good knowledge in substation design, HV cables sizing and installation, transmission system design, earthing system design and applications, and power system protection design and applications.

Overview

Corporate crime is an unlikable fact in today’s big business world. It has touched every country, every industry, and has no signs of stopping. Throughout the past 5 years, the number of reported cases of fraud and corruption has continued to grow radically across regions. Compounding this are the challenges faced by the audit team and a general lack of the necessary skill sets to collect the right audit evidence so critical to criminal investigations.

Virtually every entity suffers from fraud, though management might not know it. With fraud costing entities an estimated 5% of their annual revenues, organizations lacking proactive fraud prevention measures are the most at risk.

Occupational fraud is a significant threat to any organisation. Those organisations which employ fewer anti-fraud controls are more vulnerable to fraud.

Forensic auditing provides an investigation methodology and accounting analysis that is suitable to the court which will form the basis for discussion, debate and ultimately dispute resolution. This course concentrates on practical advice for internal auditors in the fight against fraud, with focus sessions on deterrence, data mining and interviewing in a stressed environment. It provides an incisive analysis of how fraud occurs within an organisation and explains the latest techniques for fighting it.

His clients are companies from different sector: construction, retail, multimedia, manufacturing, etc. He is also a consultant for the Global Bankers Institute.

He is a Finance Trainer for different international organisations and their clients, including Oil & Gas companies and banks, and he has delivered training in the UK and abroad. Some of the areas of training are: Forensic Auditing, Fraud Prevention and Detection, Internal Auditing and Internal Controls, Money Laundering, Budgeting and Costing, Financial Management, IFRS, Procurement, Project Finance, Project Management, Banking, Risk Management, Cash Management and Treasury, Data Analysis, Financial Modelling.

In 2013 he became the UK representative of the International Institute of Certified Forensic Investigation Professionals (IICFIP) and an accredited tuition centre in the UK and Europe.
