Learning Objectives

This two-day workshop has been designed to provide HR Business Partners with the business and finance skills, perspectives and tools that they require to become more commercially astute within the company. To help them make the most effective decisions - decisions aligned with company strategy. Unless Partners understand how the business works, they are not likely to meet this expectation. The course also highlights how everyone's job counts towards the continuing success of the company and why all individuals must contribute by making commercially sound decisions

 

Outcomes

The primary aim of the Business Acumen programme is to generate greater understanding among attendees of how the company works and what makes it successful. This will include:

  • Having a clear understanding of the company's business environment. What is the competition?
  • Recognising company strategy and the vital role HR has to play
  • Understand how, where and when the company makes money. Decode the jargon used so extensively by the finance team
  • How being able to read financial statements helps you understand the challenges facing your colleagues
  • Understanding why ratios and comparative analysis play such a big part in your colleagues' day
  • Creating a simple budget using accepted principles
  • Being able to blend these elements together while examining your own or a specimen business case

Trainers' Profile

The trainer is a highly experienced and knowledgeable Finance training specialist and leadership coach, his skills honed during 25 years in a variety of management roles. He has spent a considerable amount of time training and coaching young and developing leaders, his work spanning direct leadership situations as a captain in the British Army in conflict zones to mentoring multinational teams of bankers in Nagoya, Japan.

He worked for more than 15 years in middle-and senior-level management for a variety of international banks. He ran proprietary portfolios in Fixed Income, Foreign Exchange, swaps and other derivative instruments. He sat on Risk Management committees in both London and Tokyo before becoming a learning and development professional. He now uses his extensive experience to deliver highly effective finance and leadership coaching to a wide range of businesses.

The trainer has managed and organised investment-banking teams on three continents, this work involving considerable organisational skills as well as deep knowledge of international markets. He is fluent in French and German.
